NRA Youth Education Summit

NRA Accepting 2012 Youth Education Summit Applications

FAIRFAX, Va.- The National Rifle Association is accepting applications from high school sophomores and juniors across the country for the National Youth Education Summit (Y.E.S.) from June 25 - July 1, 2012 in Washington, DC.

Forty-five outstanding students are chosen each year to travel to the nation's capital for a seven day, all expense paid educational experience. The summit encourages young adults to become well-rounded citizens by learning about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, how the federal government works and the importance of being active in civic affairs.

Activities on this year's schedule include:
Meeting national leaders from Capitol Hill and around Washington, DC Guest speakers at NRA Headquarters and the National Firearms Museum Informative tours at historic sites and monuments in and around Washington, DC Competitive debates with other high school students from across the nation

"I would recommend this trip for anyone interested in learning what it means to be an American," said past participant Amanda Krpan. "You don't have to be experienced with firearms to enjoy the week - there's more going on then you can image. It will exceed your expectations just like it did mine!"

In addition to the week in Washington DC, Y.E.S. participants compete for $30,000 in college scholarships. The first round of awards totals $10,000 and is given at the conclusion of the Y.E.S. program. A second round of scholarships is comprised of $20,000 and involves a second application, available to the participants after they go through the Y.E.S. program. Since the program's inception in 1996, more than $340,000 in scholarships has been awarded.

Entry into the program requires submission of a completed application form, high school transcript, three-page essay on the Second Amendment, personal statement, and three letters of recommendation. Interested students should have their application post-marked no later than February 1, 2012.

Shooting Sports e-Records Clarification

Hi All!
Happy New Year!

I know that I may have confused people when I put the supplements in the e-records especially in the Shooting Sports projects. Please let your Shooting Sports leaders and families know that this is how it is to work. The 4-H member needs to only fill out one e-record no matter how many disciplines he or she may be taking.

For example: A member is taking .22 and shotgun as disciplines –let’s say the member picks the .22 e-record—that e-record contains the .22 shooting log and the shooting sports inventory—all the member needs to do is go to the e-records page (http://www.colorado4h.org/project_resources/erecords/index.php) and go to the bottom of the General/Natural Resources Projects and get the shotgun log record to put in the .22 e-record. The member DOES NOT have to do two e-records—so please make sure that your leaders and members understand this.

Sympathy to Schutz Family

Long-time 4-H shooting sports leader, Dave Schutz, lost his wife, Patsy, to cancer this week in Raton, NM. The funeral will be in Akron, Colorado on Friday, Dec. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church.(Third and Ash)

The family plans to set up a scholarship fund for a nursing scholarship; but that has yet to be put in place. Checks may be made to Dave Schutz or the Patricia Schutz Memorial.

New Contest Tools Available

We have posted some Contest Tools for you on the State 4-H Shooting Sports Contest site. The tools consist of the firing line procedures & instructions that will be used on the firing line at the State Shoot this next year. Feel free to use these documents as part of your local/county shoots. These will be useful to give your youth shooters a better feel of the instructions they will hear at the state shoot. We have also posted the shotgun games score sheets (including tie breaker score sheets) that we use at the State Shoot. The score sheets are for trap, skeet & 5-stand. 2012 Hunting/Outdoor Skills Qualifying Event Date Rescheduled!

I have posted the new dates for the 2012 4-H Hunting/Outdoor Skills Contest in Mesa County. This event is the state qualifier for the 4-H Hunting/Outdoor Skills discipline. Senior 4-H members selected at this event will represent Colorado this summer at the 4-H National Invitational Shoot in Grand Island, Nebraska. Kit Carson County Youth Hunting/Shooting Activity Day Event

ATTENTION: Those with 4-H Shooting Sports Program responsibilities …

Are you between the ages of 10 and 17 and would like to learn some great outdoor skills related to hunting pheasants? I would like to invite you to the 6th annual Kit Carson County Chapter of Pheasants Forever Youth Activity Day on Saturday December 3, 2011 at the Burlington Gun Club west of Burlington. There will be a variety of activities including shooting (shotgun, .22 rifle and archery) and hunting (pheasant and partridge!) for you to experience. Your experiences will be lead by qualified adult volunteers and teen leaders who will guide you through each event! You will even have the opportunity to sign up for a mentoring program where you will get to hunt again (with an adult mentor) at a later date!

Sounds like fun? Let me sweeten the pot … it is all FREE! You would be fed breakfast and lunch and will get to experience each of the activities!

Below is a link to a flyer that gives more information about this event. You do not need a hunter safety card or be a member of 4-H to participate in this event! You don’t even have to be from Kit Carson County to participate! So, if you have some friends that would be interested in coming out with you, bring them along! We are limited to about 40 youth shooters so call one of the numbers on the flyer to have your spaces reserved!

I want to thank the Kit Carson County Pheasants Forever Chapter for once again providing this excellent opportunity for our youth! If you have any questions, please let me know.

Birth of Baby Kwang!

Passing good news along that Brenda Kwang had her baby on October 3rd. Brenda and Andrew welcomed their healthy baby girl at 1:01am. Kaycee Li-Yun Kwang weighed 7lbs 9.9oz and was 20 inches long. Mom and baby are doing great. Brenda will be at home on maternity leave for a couple months.

STATE FAIR THANK YOU!

I would like to take this time to Thank all the Volunteers that make the State Fair Shooting Sports Contest such a Huge Success. From the Overall Superintendent to the Office help, Runners, Setup/Tear down crews and of Course the County Coaches and Shooters, There are too many of you to personally name.

Without the support of the Gun Clubs (Pueblo West Sportsman Club)
(Pikes Peak Gun Club) these shoots would not be as successful as they have been.

If I had any power with the guy above, Saturdays’ weather would have been like Mondays’

Please let your discipline Superintendent know how you feel. If you had a problem let them know this as well, (if there is something broke, we need to know to be able to fix it)

And last I would like to personally Thank Jeramy McNeely for his constant even keel attitude. It has been a pleasure working with him the last 2 years.

Revised State Shoot Squads

As promised, the revised squad lists for .22 Rifle, Air Rifle, Air Pistol, Archery & Muzzleloader are now posted to the Colorado 4-H Shooting Sports web site. Here is the direct link to the revised squads.http://www.co4hshooting.org/ss_contest/2011_contest_squad_lists.html

I want to point out that there is important registration information for county coaches on the squad page. There will NOT be any concessions offered at the Air Rifle/Pistol and Muzzleloading sites. Please make appropriate arrangements for these locations.

The time has come! You can now enter your 2011 Colorado State Shoot Contest shooters!

I would like to let you know that only those county leaders (coaches) who have been authorized by their County Extension Staff will have the special credentials necessary to use the 4-HOnline Event Registration system. These credentials were issued earlier in the year! Your County Extension Office staff will also have the credentials necessary to use the registration system as is normal for their use of the 4-HOnline system. For more information, contact your Extension Office or Overall Contest Superintendent.

2011 National Instructor Training

To: State Team members and everyone with Shooting Sports Responsibilities.

The National Instructor Training Workshop will be May 15-20 in Madrid Iowa.

If any current instructors, preferably more that two years experience, are interested in becoming State Team members and are willing to commit to at least two years to instructing at the state level. Please have them contact me.

We have funds to send a few folks but approval will be based upon geography and state team needs.
We are severely limited in Archery on the west /NW and in Shotgun, pistol, and archery in the SW, Pistol, rifle, in the SE,. At this point we have no team members from the Valley area.

We need to know by April 15th

The 2010 Annual 4-H Shooting Sports meeting will be at the Embassy Suites in Colorado Springs on December 11, 2010, at 9:00 a.m.

This year’s meeting will be held on Saturday, December 11th only, with out-of-town attendees arriving on Friday evening. If you did not respond to my first email on September 16, 2010, please do so immediately and let me know if you will need a room on Friday night, December 10th.

Please Note: Hotel rooms on Friday night, December 10th are only covered for the Executive Committee and all the new folks on the team. Lunch on Saturday, December 11th is covered for everyone attending.

Come take a shot at an archery target with your bow and arrow and try to be the closest to the center mark on the target at the Colorado State Fair 4-H archery competition on August 22, 2010. Bring your bow and arrows to the event, get in line, take your best shot, and see if you are the closest to the "pin" at the end of the day.

Archery Range At CSF Needs Helpers!

Ok folks it’s time to sign up as a club or county to run the 4-H Archery range during the state fair. Last year several clubs made some money for their programs running the booth. The Natural resources building will be all CSU and we will again have the archery range there. There will be no air rifle range this year.

The Fair is : Friday August 27 through Monday September 6 Hours for the range are: Week days: noon -8:00 p.m. Weekends and Labor Day: 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. We need to cover all of this time.

There has to be a certified archery instructor on the line at all times. Request for dates should include names of those working with contact information for all including e-mail addresses. Dates will be allocated on a first come first serve basis via e-mail. Phone calls for info are ok but e-mail gets the dates.

Baby Campbell funeral information

Hello All,

I spoke with Holli again today, and she seems to be working through each little step. Thank you to everyone for all of words of support and condolences. Holli also wanted me to express their appreciation for all of the flowers that everyone has sent. They are so beautiful and cheer up their home. She wanted me to share that they have set up a memorial fund at the Children's Hospital and have designated it to support the NICU area. Cards and flowers can also be sent to their home address. Dear Extension Colleagues and Friends,
It is with a very heavy heart that I write to you today to share the news of the birth of our son, Luke Arthur Campbell. Luke is, was and always will be our Angel, but was God's Angel first. He was born to our big world on March 6th, 2010 weighing 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measuring 21 inches long, but never had the chance to take his first breath. Many questions still surround the death of our son, and we know they might never all be answered. But, the one thing we do know is this -- healing will come to us over time with the support of family and friends. Our family is with us now, but we both know they will all travel home soon, leaving us with our wonderful network of friends to help us continue along our healing journey. This is why we want welcome you to our home (162 Willow Place South, Broomfield, CO 80020) on Friday, March 12, 2010 from 2 - 6 PM for an informal friends gathering. We will hold a family only funeral service on Saturday. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Rundus Funeral Home in Broomfield.

We know you may not have words -- we don't either, but your presence alone will let us know of your support for us during this time. Please know that we also understand you may have schedules to keep, so only come if you can. Our paths will likely cross at some point in the future, but in the meantime, we certainly appreciate all of you thoughts and prayers.

In a recent email sent by Jim Hamilton, we asked that any suggested changes to the Shooting Sports Rule Book be sent to me by October 23, 2009. Since I will be leaving to attend the National 4-H Agents conference that day and will not return to the office until November 2, we have decided to extend the deadline. If you have suggested changes for the Rule Book, please submit them on or before November 2, 2009. You may submit changes to holli.campbell@colostate.edu. They should be in the following format:

STATE FAIR THANK YOU

I would like to take this time to Thank Holli Campbell for the job she has done these last 2 years as the Overall State Fair Shooting Sports Contest Superintendent. I believe this was one of the Best run contests that I have been involved with.

I would also like to Thank all the Volunteers that make the State Fair Shooting Sports Contest such a Huge Success. From the Office help to the Runners and of Course the County Coaches and Shooters, There are too many of you to personally name.
