I have a young man in my club, Eagle Co, who is into Civil War reenactments. He's gotten his Dad involved and they travel to other states to participate. Would a Civil War costume qualify for the period dress contest at the State Shoot? Thougt I'd check in here before I mentioned it to him. Thanks for your feedback.
Todd O. Eagle Co
Todd -- I'll forward this comment to Jim Hamilton for his thoughts ... I'll have him e-mail you direct. Perry
I too do Civil War Re-enactment -
I teach BP classes for the state team.
Though the "essence" of our discipline IS more round ball and "fur trade" era -
My own two cents is - AUTHENTISITY - study shown in the costume and it's depiction. Personally ( but subject to over ruling by Jim Hamilton and others)
the essence of 4H is LEARNING by Doing - so if the effort and research is there and we all know the black powder WAS there in the Civil War = WHY NOT!
Don't expect to shoot mine balls unless in the special class -
but what the hey the shot MORE Buck N' Ball in the Civil War than mine's anyway!!

Don & Todd - I'm guessing that CW era costume would be interesting and appropriate ... my question, would a Springfield type rifle qualify for the "traditional" class ... ie: no musket caps ... Maybe this would be more of an Open Class entry???

Good day.
I have been asked by Mr. Hamilton to address the blogs that have been posted in reference to the 4-H shooting and costume contest. The intended purpose of the Heritage 4-H program and the costumed shooting sports is to promote and inspire an interest in American history among the 4-H members. No difined time line has been established for individual depictions nor has their been an established local for depiction.
The American Civil War is an appropriate time period to depict in the costume contest. Keep in mind the members are judged on content as well as costumes. As to the Springfiled issue; until the advent of the 1865/66 conversions they were muzzleloading rifles utilizing a cap. The .58 Springfield (.577 Enfiled and .54 Lorenz)musket/rifle was and is designed for the 'Minie Ball', or expanding base bullet, but will also shoot round ball, though often not as accurately. I would refrain from using buck and ball in a musket rifle as it was not designed to shoot this load. That is a load that was designed for smooth bored muskets. It loads and shoots poorly in both three and six grooved rifle/muskets. As a Civil War historian I would suggest that the 4-H member research their presenttaion well. If wishing to connect the portrayal to Colorado the 4-H member should restrain from depicting C.S.A troops as they did not entered the area now known as Colorado. Other questions may be directed to me at lmow@juno.com
Respectfully,
John C.F. Luzader
